There are some definite advantages to having kids when in grad school!
I have a media production course and have used my kids in almost all of my assignments! From photo essays, staring my daughter, about a girl who wants to become a mermaid….to a film short about a bunch of kids who won’t eat their dinner…. its been a lot of fun to include them in my projects. (The photo in the banner at the top of this blog is one I took for an assignment)
And there have been some great side benefits as well.
The kids see me working on assignments, trying different things, making mistakes, and trying again. My oldest son and I had a great conversation about procrastination the other day when he found out the assignment I was working on wasn’t due for another couple of weeks. ( he still waited until the last minute on his next project, by the way, but he mentioned wanting to get it done sooner….so we’ll see if I’m actually influencing them at all!)
And a really great unexpected benefit – in my short film about kids trying a new dinner, we had to take several “takes.” What no one noticed — by the time I had my shots, the kids had eaten their entire dinner!!
I may have to try that assignment again…..

I love it! That is great. I especially like the antidote that the “takes” actually caused the kids to eat all their dinner – without realizing it!!!
